PREPARATION GUIDE

Newcomer Starting Checklist

Use this checklist to organize your first questions and find a suitable settlement agency.

  1. Choose Your Priorities

Write down the support you need first: everyday orientation, language learning, employment information or community connections.

  2. Find A Local Agency

Use the official service finder with your city or postal code. Agency programs and eligibility vary; contact the agency before visiting. The IRCC finder excludes Quebec and links to Quebec support separately.

  3. Prepare Your Questions

Ask about eligibility, available languages, online or in-person appointments, waiting times and which services are free.

  4. Keep A Simple Appointment List

Record the organization’s name, contact details, appointment date and questions you want answered. Ask the agency which documents to bring.

  5. Know What Is Free

TrueTax newcomer information and referrals are free. Any additional paid TrueTax service requires a separately agreed scope and fee.

General preparation information, not immigration advice or an eligibility assessment. Agencies determine eligibility and availability. Avoid sending sensitive identification or records through this website.
